ABOUT BROADCASTING ASSOCIATION OF NEPAL(BAN)
Introduction:
Broadcasting Association of Nepal (BAN) is an umbrella organization of all the independent Radio stations in Nepal. BAN is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit making organization working in media development since 2003. BAN has been advocating for the welfare of its members since the time of its establishment. Witnessing several ups and down in the country, BAN has always stood in the front to support democratic movements and social transformations in the country.
Beside the political movement it has been working to create social harmony and sustainable peace in the country by broadcasting various kinds of programs in various local languages through its members.
Role:
BAN envisions a prosperous Nepal with peace and stability as it has entered now into a new era of development through promulgation of new constitution. As the member FM stations are spread throughout the country, the impact of its social messages is widely witnessed. BAN has been playing supportive role to acquire MDG in Nepal. Various programs broadcast through its members stations are quite supportive and well praised in the society since they are quite popular.
Target Audience:
FM radio has become indispensible part of Nepali society. Due to its geography, Nepal is mostly dependent on FM radio stations as they are the faster means to disseminating the information as compared to any other means of the communications in the country. BAN believes in a peace and stability as Nepal has witnessed several political ups and down but has failed to acquire economic growth despite having substantial natural resources. BAN stands by the fact that that FM radio can support Nepal acquiring rapid growth if it utilizes its resources properly and peace and stability are must for it which BAN can contribute a lot to. BAN members have fixed different types of target audiences. The audience group ranges from a small child to elderly citizens. That’s why; various programs and awareness messages (PSA) are proved quite effective in the country. BBC MEDIA ACTION, VITAMIN A PROGRAMS, POLIO ERADICATION PROGRAMS of Nepal government and various reputed organization take the support of BAN members for their broader outreach.
Members and present status:
There are about 400 members of BAN presently. BAN members are distributed in 54 Districts of Nepal but its outreach is almost 100% area and population wise. The broadcast capacity of FM station ranges from 100 watt to 10 KW. Several research conducted in the country indicate that BAN members are more popular and also they are ahead of raising social issues in the country. About 38% (SAMARTH-2014-15) of the total air time is dedicated to the social awareness as every member raises gender, health, environment, right based issue among others.
Role in social transformation:
BAN members are distributed in 54 districts of Nepal and due to their higher transmitting capacity their transmission covers almost 100% of the population of Nepal. It has been quite supportive in broadcasting the social awareness program and contribute to the social transformation of the country and also in peace building process too. Their popularity shows that the programs broadcast are high impact in the society and hence various I/NGO’s opts to broadcast their program through our members. It is seen that Nepal is making good progress in acquiring the MDG where role of FMs has been quite supportive.
